Dr. Fizza Raza

Dr. Fizza Raza is a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Georgia State University, specializing in demography, global health, and gender studies. She earned her PhD in Sociology from Texas A&M University in 2023, with a dissertation exploring fertility trends in South Asia and the South Asian diaspora in the United States. Her research interests focus on fertility, contraception, gender inequality, domestic violence, and the health disparities faced by marginalized populations, particularly within South Asian communities. Dr. Raza's academic journey includes a Masters in Population and Development from the London School of Economics and a Bachelors in Economics from Lahore University of Management Sciences, Pakistan. She has authored several publications, including studies on contraceptive use in South Asia, gender-based violence in Pakistan, and the socioeconomic determinants of fertility in the South Asian diaspora. Her work has been published in journals such as Violence Against Women, Population Research and Policy Review, and Women's Studies International Forum. Before joining Georgia State University, Dr. Raza held multiple research and teaching positions at Texas A&M University. She worked on NSF-funded projects to address sexual harassment in STEM, led research on women’s self-derogation using data from the Kaplan Longitudinal Study, and mentored undergraduates in quantitative and qualitative research. As a graduate teaching consultant, she trained first-time TAs and designed student-centered courses on demography and sociology. Dr. Raza's service to the discipline includes chairing sessions at major academic conferences, serving as an elected representative in professional associations, and providing peer review for sociology and demography journals. Her fieldwork spans both urban and rural regions of Pakistan and the United States.
