Sustaining Power: Women’s Struggles Against Backlash in Contemporary South Asia
Project Duration: 2021 to 2025When, how, and why do women’s power struggles succeed in retaining power and sustaining their gains against backlash? ‘Sustaining Power: Women’s struggles against backlash in contemporary South Asia’ (SuPWR) seeks to understand the strategies and processes of women’s movements in South Asia in the face of backlash from regressive social, political and economic forces.
Launched in January 2020, SuPWR is a five-year multi-country study funded by the Economic Social Research Council (ESRC), United Kingdom. The project will identify specific women’s movements in the domain of family, community, market, and the state in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal respectively and study these through longitudinal work and gendered political economy analysis to be able to capture normative and institutional change processes that the women’s movements undergo.
